ETIAS 2025: The Guide

Busy airport or metro station with walking blurred defocused people

As you start planning your next vacation to Italy or elsewhere in Europe, it’s important to note that Europe’s entry rules are changing in 2025. ETIAS (The European Travel Information and Authorization System) will require visitors from certain countries to register online before traveling to the EU and Schengen Area, including Italy and Spain. But there’s no need to feel overwhelmed by this update –  we’ve got you covered. Our ETIAS 2025 guide will walk you through everything you need to know, so you can focus on enjoying your trip. We’ll make sure your journey is both memorable and seamless!

What Is ETIAS?

ETIAS is a digital system that improves both border security and travel efficiency in the EU and the Schengen Area. Starting in 2025, tourists from countries that are not currently part of these regions will need to obtain ETIAS authorization before traveling.

The ETIAS visa waiver links to your passport, and is valid for up to three years or until your travel document expires. If you renew your passport, you will need to apply for a new ETIAS.

With a valid ETIAS travel authorization, you can remain in any of the included countries for up to 90 days in a 180 – day period, whether as one visit, or any combination of visits. You can leave and re-enter the eligible countries, as long as your trip doesn’t exceed the short – term stay limit.

Without an ETIAS, there is a risk of being denied entry at the border.

Who Needs an ETIAS 2025 Authorization?

The ETIAS official website provides two lists:

  • One list of 60 countries whose citizens need to apply for ETIAS authorization
  • A second list of 30 countries that require ETIAS authorization to enter

If you’re from one of the 60 countries, including the US, UK, or Canada, and are traveling to one of the 30 countries on the second list, you will need to apply for an ETIAS.

When To Submit Your Application

We recommend applying well in advance of your trip, ideally before booking hotel and flight reservations. To be on the safe side, aim to submit your request 1 – 2 months prior to your trip.

In certain cases, processing can take up to two weeks. Therefore, it’s best to apply as early as possible to avoid any potential delays.

How to Apply for an ETIAS Authorization

Once the ETIAS online application form becomes available, you can fill it out via the website or mobile app. Here’s what you’ll need to do:

  • Make sure you have a valid travel document, like a passport
  • Provide personal details, such as your date of birth and where you intend to stay
  • Pay a small fee of 7 Euros. However, those under 18, over 70, and family members of EU citizens or those with EU travel rights are exempt.

If you’re applying for someone else, you’ll need to declare your details and your relationship to the applicant. The form must be completed by a parent or legal guardian for those younger than 18.

Applying With Limited Validity

You may request an ETIAS with limited validity for the following reasons:

  • You are traveling for urgent reasons, such as a medical emergency
  • Your ETIAS application form is likely to be refused or has already been denied, annulled, or revoked

Submit a request after applying for ETIAS, clarifying your reasons and destination, in order to apply. You will receive an email with the decision – which you can appeal if refused.

The country’s authorities will determine the length of your stay, which can be up to 90 days. You can use limited validity for multiple entries, but it restricts travel to specifically defined regions. In contrast, a standard ETIAS authorization allows travel to all 30 countries.

After Applying

After you apply, you’ll recieve an ETIAS application number and a follow-up email with the status. If your request is denied, the reasons will be provided. Don’t worry – there will be instructions on how to appeal the decision.

When you fly, bring the same travel document that you used for your ETIAS application, because the authorization is linked to it. Border guards may verify that these details meet ETIAS requirements. After that, you’re all set to enjoy your trip!

When Will ETIAS Be Implemented?

The ETIAS start date is not expected until 6 months after the introduction of the EES (Entry Exit System) which itself is not due to start until early 2025. The EES will collect biometric data, like facial images and fingerprints, and track your entry time and location.

The implementation of ETIAS will be gradual. First, there will be a 6 month transitional period, where travelers should apply for ETIAS, but those without it won’t be denied entry. After this, a grace period will follow, and everyone will need an ETIAS authorization unless it’s their first time visiting Europe after the transitional period.

Note: There is a chance the ETIAS launch date will be delayed again – stay tuned for updates on when ETIAS starts.
